Word Articulation Project (WAP)

71ed8616-c8c0-4e17-834a-620c673007bf

The WAP project focuses on English language, pronunciation, digital skills and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) . We will develop a mobile app, which will include speaking and listening exercises categorised by every day topics; quizzes, recording functions and basic phrases and common expressions.

According to the Common European Framework of reference for Languages, "the learning, teaching, assessment" guide states that needs analysis and comprehension and expression skills are vital when we are communicating in a foreign language, in this case, in English. The needs analysis was carried out by the ESL partners and it was concluded, that the speaking and listening abilities of students and also teachers are below the expected level.

The WAP project addresses the needs to develop and take on new approaches to teaching and learning and to use new technologies to support and facilitate this. Linguistic awareness, linguistic responsive teaching, combining language with content teaching and supporting learners in multilingual settings is an essential element of teacher education. According to research, many English as a Second Language (ESL) students and teachers seem to have some difficulty in pronouncing some certain sounds. The partners have discussed the needs of schools and teachers and all activities and outputs were developed accordingly.

The project will produce a mobile app, to help teachers and students practising their pronunciation by imitating the native accent. This is the best way to perfect their listening and speaking skills, as beginners are usually afraid to speak in front of others, because they think they will make a mistake. This way, beginners can practice on their own, repeat each conversation as many times as they need until they feel comfortable to engage in a conversation with their classmates, colleagues and native speakers. Additionally, by regularly practising pronunciation, users will assimilate English expressions and phrases for several everyday situations, which eventually will help them to think in English and speak fluently with ease.
