The Academy for International Science and Research (AISR) is an award-winning International centre of excellence for STEM education in the UK and Ireland. AISR is an independent STEM Institute, located in CoLab, Letterkenny. Our campus offers vocational qualifications to the highest standards (technical professional level) in Science, Mathematics, Information Technology and Engineering as well as in the broader STEM areas of business, education and digital media to international students.
Our STEM Experience engages students in the English language combined with a variety of educational and practical workshops, introducing the possibility of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as future study and career options for them. All our workshops are packed with a lot of fun and help students to solve various STEM challenges such as bridge design, hydraulic robotic arm or build shark models and controllers.
Letterkenny is at the heart of the Northwest and offers a unique experience with a vibrant social and cultural scene. It is Donegal’s largest town part of the Wild Atlantic Way Adventure with stunning landscapes for which the island of Ireland is famous. In addition, Letterkenny is a very safe location - the perfect destination for young students! There are so many reasons why Donegal topped National Geographic Traveller’s Cool List for 2017 – blue flag beaches, championship golf courses, charismatic people, stunning scenery and unrivalled hospitality.
ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS
Each week, there is a full-day excursion and one half-day trip to a variety of destinations. Students are accompanied by staff on all excursions. Popular visits include Grianan of Aileach Fort, Glenveagh National Park or Slieve League.
Social programmes are an essential part of any summer and winter school experience, and they are a great way for students to socialise and practice their English with each other. In addition to traditional activities such as sports, movie night and disco party, activities also include:
Students are given a fun challenging quiz. The winners are awarded with a prize .
Everybody loves a game of Bingo. Students need to match the numbers on the selected balls with their game card and the first to match all numbers wins!
Summer and Winter School Content
The STEM summer and winter school offers the opportunity for students:
to improve their English language through our multi-level curriculum,
to gain valuable self-study skills,
to increase their confidence.
to achieve their individual goals in language learning and
to gain an appreciation of the importance of STEM related subjects for future work and study.
The curriculum incorporates English grammar, language for life and vocational skills sessions using CLIL methods through STEM topics.
The English lessons focus on the communicative style of language and provide grammar and vocabulary tailored to a student’s ability.
The language for life lessons integrate a wide variety of topics including language, literacy, culture and life skills.
The vocational skills sessions introduce students to problem solving techniques and help them improve their academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The variety of lessons provide students with a stimulating and comprehensive learning experience throughout their visit.
The well-being, security and safety of all AISR students is our main priority. There is always at least one first-aid trained member of staff available at any point during the day and we also have links with local doctors and hospitals.
Our staff always monitor how our students are settling in and communicating with the other international students. We carry out daily meetings with students, bedroom inspections and students are supervised at all times. All of the activities are designed to be inclusive of all students and to make sure that each student gets the maximum benefit. AISR teachers also act as role models and are dedicated to developing students confidence and enjoyment for learning. The Academy's staff are also committed to delivering up to date and fit for purpose careers advice to all our students.
A Welcome pack will be sent by email to parents before the programme starts, which includes contact numbers, travel and arrival information and all school course details.
